ONE ON ONE, Juilliard Drama School "Happening",
October 2007.
At the invitation of James Houghton, head of the Juilliard
Drama School, I spent three weeks with a group of playwrights
and fourth year acting students conducting a Theatre for One™ workshop as part of the Juilliard "Happenings" series. The
workshop culminated in a "happening" in which the entire room,
in addition to the Theatre for One™ booth, was arranged to
facilitate One on One interactions. Zayd Dohrn, Emily Schwend,
Carly Mensch, Sam Hunter, and several of the students wrote
original texts that were performed in Theatre for One™ for
both randomly selected and specifically chosen individuals.
The pieces were televised on monitors outside of the booth.
When not performing in the booth, the actors were engaging
audience members One on One with interviews, storytelling,
secret sharing, music playing, slow dancing, headphone listening,
blind contour drawing, gift givings and more. In addition,
through instructions handed out at the entrance, audience
members were guided to participate in similar One on One engagements
with other audience members. Inside Theatre for One™, and outside
in the theatre, the emphasis was on using spatial intimacy
to equalize the relationship between performer and audience
member in order to maximize the potential for meaningful exchange.
Special Thanks to Kathy Hood (Administrative
Director), Yana Babaev (Stage Manager), JB Barricklo (Production
Manager), Emily Stork and the entire Juilliard Staff for their
support. Deep gratitude to the actors: Cara Cook, Meg Fee,
Victoria Goldberg, Stephen King, Laura Leigh Moser, Dion Mucciacito,
Erica Newhouse, Monica Raymund, Joy Suprano, Han Tang, Rob
Thompson, Scott Thomas and Finn Wittrock. Thanks also to Brian
Mertes and the Juilliard Community who participated in the
Happening.
